In our life we have lifted many heavy responsibilities, we have wrestled with many problems, we have fought (Boxed) our way out of many difficult situations, many hurdles we have crossed, we aimed high, hit many targets to achieved desired goals through sheer grit, self-belief & determination.

Feeling of Joy, Pride, Elation & Happiness sets in like already winning a medal the moment a sportsperson from the village is selected to represent the Country. A sports person grows through his own grit, determination & talent. This talent grows with all round support & feeds aspiration of all. This is like one person fulfilling dreams of many.  

In our country our sportsperson carries hopes, emotions & prayers of every person of his village. Sacrifice, dedication, efforts & expectations of every member of the family, neighbours & villagers are with the aspirant since its inception. This was the feeling when our athletes left for the games.

Tokyo Olympics has just concluded & our Athletes performed much better than in previous Olympics. Our emotions were constantly fluctuating & on an upswing. We lustily cheered every effort of our athletes as hopes of winning a medal rose. Euphoria lifted our spirits as their efforts raised hopes of good result but as games progressed most of our athletes were unable to come up to our expectations.

Main basis of our heightened interest was lack of medals in earlier Olympics. For us even missing a chance of reaching the medal podium is taken as an achievement whereas winning a Gold medal is normal news to those Nations who have been winning medals in every Game. For us anything was better than nothing.

This reminded me of earlier formative times when our life was based on bare necessity. Life was not lived on loans but savings from income. A Godrej Cupboard, Radio, Ceiling Fan was a rarity. To buy a cupboard or a transistor required great planning & every member of the family willingly cooperated as we had to cut down on certain expenses to accumulated funds for new acquirement. Refrigerator & Landline phone was a luxury. Vehicle & Television set was with very rich.

We would start feeling joy & happiness from the day it was decided to buy a new cupboard or a Radio or fan. Whenever things are bought with great efforts the sheen & pleasure lingers for long long time. Acquiring it becomes a proud moment & an occasion for celebration for all.

For those who have in abundance, winning a few more medals is just a routine. Individually athlete’s efforts & joy in winning a medal never diminishes but the reaction & elation of the nation is muted as winning medals has become a routine for them. It is just a routine for them.

This is like our present life. Now we have all the gadgets & luxuries to live a comfortable life. The level of elation of a new acquisition has started diminishing. The duration of joy & happiness of acquiring a new or better gadget is very short but the craving for more is never satiated. We stop enjoying the value of the acquisition as our attention is grabbed by new cravings.. We feel happiness can be bought but actually its worth diminishes.
